The Untamed Tiger: Illustration and self initiated projects

Graham Rowle wrote an article on how professionals react to constraints in illustration and graphic design, do they prefer working freely or by a brief, can you tell which images are portrayed to be commissioned or self-initiated, Graham Rawle looks at a couple of artists for you to think about these things!

Anna Bhushan
Anna Bhushan is a lecturer in illustration at Cardiff School of Art & Design – but she’s also a meditation teacher, freelance illustrator for some of the world’s best publishers and a researcher in Indian philosophy.
Anna Bhushan works in watercolor and gouache to create illustrations and paintings for commissioned assignments and exhibitions. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2004, Anna has been dividing her time between London and New York and has taught illustration at Cardiff School of Art & Design since 2012.

Here is some of her work;

Which is image do you feel is commissioned and which image do you feel is self initiated?

Matthew Richardson

I feel matthew Richardsons first image is commisioned as it looks more organised and maybe part of something like telling a story, compared to his second composition which I feel is self inituated.
